I propose the renaming of Notting Hill. Who arranges such things? The Mayor?
I have no political motivation in this. By chance a better option has come to light. And this for an area whose name has changed subtly over the years and is probably about due for a refresh (Knottynghull, Knotting-Bernes, Knutting-Barnes, Notingbarons, to name a few).
I was writing a letter this morning using my recently installed copy of Open Office (open source office software - think Word and Excel without the cost, and the bugs). I typed "Notting Hill" and the spell checker threw up a list of suggested alternatives. I'd like to see a hypenated version of that list replacing the area's existing name, for no other reason than that there's a certain poetry to it.
Read it aloud:
Rotting-Totting-Lotting-Dotting-Potting-Hotting-Snotting-Knotting-Notating-Noting-Netting-Nutting-Nothing-Not-Ting-Hill
Unadventurous to the last, Microsoft Word accepted "Notting Hill" with a predictable tedium.
